Elyria West, built in 1973 as a smaller, more spacious high school to accommodate students from the north and west sides of town, was seen as the crowning achievement of the district at a time when Elyria High School was filled to capacity.

The groundbreaking ceremony was held on August 19, 1971. After considerable study of student population, geographic conditions and the capacity of the school, the attendance boundaries were established by the Board of Education. The total acreage of the school is 47,4573 acres, costing $134,518. The school takes up 111,000 square feet. The total cost of the school and equipment was $3,710,838.

Wayne E. Appleby Jr. gave the school its name in the "Name the School" contest given by The Chronicle Telegram.

There is a large Elyria West memorabilia showcase honoring past memories in the new high school athletic wing.

Elyria West High School closed in 1996
